This project was a public based work on the diversity of motherhood today as a response to the stigma around breastfeeding in public. Mica had been exploring this topic for several months to understand some of the critiques or comments women receive when becoming a mother. She met women who have bottle fed, breast fed, bottle and breastfed, extended breastfeeding and tandem feeding. She has met women who have had home births to caesareans, IVF babies to miscarriages – all have received comments on how they had or were bringing up their children. The aim of this project is to embrace the diversity of motherhood by taking proud portraits of these women and exposing these images in public location to normalise the different choices mothers make for their children without receiving criticisms or judgement.
